LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck. Liposuction also shapes (contours) these areas. Other names for liposuction include lipoplasty and body contouring.

History

Without any doubt one of the most popular procedures and with the greatest influence on modern aesthetic medicine. Invented by the Italian gynecologist Dr. Giorgio Fischer but disclosed and used for cosmetic purposes for the first time by Dr. Gerard Yves Illouz of France in 1977, who docked a cannula and introduced the continuous movement used until today. The technique has undergone major changes since its introduction mainly in regard to cannulas, vacuum cleaners, anesthesia, technology as well as more precise indications. However, there is no doubt that the greatest evolutionary leap occurred in 1985 when the dermatologist Jeffrey Klein invents the tumescent liposuction or wet method that we know today as hidrolipo.

Indication

Contrary to what most people think this procedure is really indicated for the treatment of localized fat. It is not a technique to lose weight or to regulate. The best candidates to be treated with lipoaspiration are those patients who are an index of body fat or slightly elevated appropriate for their height and age, it is recommended that you find in a stable body weight by approximately 4 months. Different authors agree that must not be removed more than 5 liters of fat and should not be treated more than 40 % of the body surface, hence the importance of making a good consultation with a plastic surgeon.

Technique

During the operation, the surgeon prepares the local with asepsis and antisepsis, mark the areas to be treated and it makes a small cut in the skin by which injects a liquid solution. This solution consists of anesthesia, a drug that constricts the blood vessels and saline solution (serum) that will help to dislodge the fat of the skin and the muscle, by breaking it up and turning it into a viscous liquid. Later, it will proceed to the withdrawal of fat by a suction procedure, through a cannula that has been previously introduced and that is connected to a suction machine.

Types

Without a doubt one of the surgical techniques that more has taken advantage of the technology and evolution of modern medicine is liposuction. Today can be done with the assistance of laser equipment, ultrasound, vibratory, or in a conventional manner; each with its specific benefit and indication. All carried out with the addition of a tumescent solution to facilitate the removal of the fat. Fat removal can be used to model areas in a technique known popularly as liposculpture.

Care

Considered one of the safest procedures in the field of plastic surgery, depending on the extent of this procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis (the patient receives the high the same day) or need the internment. For an adequate recovery the at overwintering and good nutrition are essential, as well as the use of compressive girdles, massage modellers and lymphatic drainage. The stitches are removed 5 to 7 days. Like any surgery the prepared with appropriate laboratory tests, cardiovascular evaluation and anesthetic are mandatory. Treatment for pain and edema surgical position greatly facilitated the return to normal activities.
